Parenting Therapy for Mothers in California

Support for mothers who want to raise their kids with intention and still have something left for themselves at the end of the day.

Parenting is the one job where everyone has an opinion about how you are doing it...

...but no ones asks how YOU are holding up.

At Smart Talk Therapy, we work with parents differently. Yes, we help you build skills and strategies that actually work with your child. But we also spend time on what is happening for you, because how you show up for your child is directly connected to what you are carrying inside.

Most parenting approaches focus entirely on the child's behavior. We look at the full picture.

We help you understand your child and tailor strategies to their specific needs and developmental stage, not a generic system designed for a different kid in a different family. And we help you understand your own emotional responses, so that the inevitable hard moments, the tantrums, the defiance, the times you lose it before you can catch yourself, become something you can navigate rather than something you just survive and feel guilty about afterward.

This is not about being a perfect parent. It is about being a present one.

How We Approach Parenting Strategies

We do not believe in one-size-fits-all parenting. What works for one child may not work for yours, and what worked last month may not work now. Our approach is collaborative and customized, drawing from evidence-based frameworks based on your child's temperament, age, and needs.

  • Behavioral interventions help children understand expectations, learn cause and effect, and build self-regulation over time. They work well for kids who respond to clear structure and consistent follow-through.

  • Attachment-based approaches focus on the emotional bond between parent and child. When a child feels securely connected to you, they cooperate more easily, manage big feelings better, and build healthier relationships for life. This connects to the identity and generational trauma work we do with parents examining their own relational history.

  • Reward systems build motivation and reinforce positive behavior in a way that feels encouraging rather than punitive. We help you design systems that are realistic for your household and actually get followed through.

  • Direct eye contact and clear communication are foundational to everything we teach. Children need to know they have your attention and that your words mean what they say.

We do not support spanking or physical discipline. We support firm, loving, consistent boundaries that teach without fear or shame.

What Makes This Different:
We Also Focus on You

This is the part most parenting programs leave out entirely.

Your emotional state during parenting is not a side issue. It is a central one. A child who watches their mother regulate herself through a hard moment learns more about emotional intelligence than any lesson you could teach them on purpose. And a mother who has a space to process her own responses, without judgment, becomes a more available and grounded parent.

We spend time in parenting therapy on:

  • Mom guilt, the constant low-grade belief that you are not doing enough, are too much, or somehow failing a child who is clearly loved and cared for. If you have read our post on why telling high-achieving moms they are fine is making things worse, you already know this pattern well.

  • Mom rage, the flash of anger that arrives faster than you expected and leaves you ashamed and confused about where it came from. Rage is not a character flaw. It is often a signal that basic needs have gone unmet for too long. We help you understand it and respond differently.

  • Emotional regulation under pressure, because staying calm when your child is not is one of the hardest things a parent is asked to do. We give you practical tools to come back to yourself in those moments.

  • Your own history with how you were parented, because the way we were raised lives in our nervous systems and shows up in our parenting whether we intend it to or not. Understanding those patterns, explored in our work around identity and generational trauma, gives you more choice about which ones to keep and which to change.

If you have ever lost your temper with your child and spent the next three hours replaying it, or cried in the car at school drop-off because you do not recognize yourself lately, you are not alone and you are not broken. You are a mother who needs support, not a better technique.

How it Works

Sessions are virtual and available to clients in California. We start by understanding your child, your household, and your goals, then build a plan specific to your family rather than pulled from a script.

Some parents come in knowing exactly what they want to work on. Others know only that something is not working and they are exhausted. Both are fine starting points.

Our therapists bring warmth and genuine curiosity to this work. Linda Abdelsayed, LMFT, PMH-C founded Smart Talk Therapy with a specific focus on supporting mothers through the emotional complexity of parenthood. Hayley Niles, LMFT holds a perinatal mental health certification and brings both professional expertise and lived experience as a mother of three. Ashlee brings her own perspective as a parent to the families she works with.

If you are ready to talk, book a free 15-minute consultation and we will help you figure out where to begin.

You can also learn more about how we work with postpartum mothers, the emotional side of the postpartum relationship, and how identity and generational patterns show up in parenting.
